Our History

Built on Experience. Strengthened by Growth.

Our Journey, Woven Over Time

Since our founding in 2001, Georgian Bay Fabrics has grown from a small Ontario-based operation into a globally recognized manufacturer of high-performance reinforcement fabrics. Our journey is defined by continuous innovation, strategic growth, and the strong relationships we’ve built along the way. From expanding our product capabilities to navigating industry challenges, each milestone reflects our commitment to quality, resilience, and long-term success.

2001

A Strong Foundation

Georgian Bay Fabrics was incorporated in 2001, beginning as a weaver of narrow fiberglass fabrics. Founded by equal partners Kirk Maheu and Gerrit van der Weg, with support from Tom Jenkinson in Sales and Marketing and guidance from experienced weaving experts, the company quickly established its footing.

In its first two years, production focused on fiberglass tapes with areal weights of 6 and 9 oz/yd² (200 and 300 g/m²), serving both industrial needs and the growing do-it-yourself repair market.

2003–2004

Expanding Capabilities

As demand grew, Georgian Bay Fabrics expanded its product offerings. In 2003, woven rovings were introduced in 15, 18, and 24 oz/yd² (450, 600, and 750 g/m²), broadening application potential.

By 2004, the company further diversified by adding Kevlar® and carbon fiber materials to its product line, strengthening its position in high-performance markets. During this time, the company also gained a strong foothold in the sporting goods industry, particularly in hockey stick manufacturing.

2008

Growth and Transformation

Rapid growth led to a major milestone in 2008, when the company relocated to a modern 30,000 sq. ft. facility in Midland, Ontario.

This move marked a shift from a regional supplier serving Ontario and Quebec to a North American manufacturer. Operations expanded to a 24/7 production schedule, reflecting increased demand and capacity.

During this period, Kirk Maheu stepped back from active involvement, and over time, Gerrit van der Weg became the majority shareholder and General Manager.

Innovation and Product Advancement

Continuing to invest in innovation, Georgian Bay Fabrics introduced a new product line of unidirectional, no-crimp fabrics under the trade name Ancaref. These advanced materials found strong demand in applications such as surfboards, snowboards, and other performance-driven products.

2018

New Ownership, Continued Leadership

In 2018, company ownership was reorganized, with Christine van der Weg becoming the majority owner. Gerrit remained actively involved as General Manager, focusing on special projects and strategic initiatives.

2024

Building for the Future

Georgian Bay Fabrics’ leadership team brings deep industry experience, with senior staff contributing over 20 years of expertise across Research & Development, Manufacturing, Management, and Accounting.

With Christine van der Weg completing her MBA in December 2024, the company continues to strengthen its foundation as a forward-thinking, well-managed organization positioned for long-term success.

Resilience and Global Reach

Over the years, Georgian Bay Fabrics has successfully navigated major challenges, including the global financial crisis, economic recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, the company has built strong, lasting relationships with customers across North America and beyond.

Today, Georgian Bay Fabrics products are used around the world.
